beach near bordeaux

im taking a flight out of bordeaux, so will arrive a few days early to check it out. i would be interested in going to the beach for a few days rather than staying in the city. i found that cap ferrat is nearby. is that a nice beach/area? where is a good/cheap place to stay there? i have heard that biarritz is a good beach area, but it seems far. how long does it take to get from bordeaux to cap ferrat and from bordeaux to biarritz? any other beach suggestions? thanks in advance

The beaches at Arcachon are nice. I don%26#39;t know much about hotels there, or availability this time of year, but it%26#39;s about an hour%26#39;s drive out from Bordeaux. The Dune Pyla is nearby and worth seeing. Cap Ferret has less in terms of hotels - mostly beach homes and condos. The dunes there are studded with old German coast artillery bunkers, some of which have rolled out onto the beach. Unusual sight. More interesting to me on that side of the bay is the town of Andernos. Gong south, I%26#39;d Biarritz is about 2-1/2 hours drive south of Bordeaux.

Outside of the developed areas (like Arcachon, Biarritz, St Jean de Luz, Hendaye) the beaches of southwestern France are farily inaccessable and wild.
