I have 10 days in mid-September to spend in the South of France and Monaco. I must be in Monaco for 2-3 days for a conference but for the rest, I would like to spend days in both the Cote d%26#39;Azur and Provence. I will be using the train for all transporation. Are there suggestions on where to base my time? Antibes has been considered and also Avignon. Price of hotels is a consideration. Can I find reasonably priced hotels and restaurants in Antibes or is there a better town? I will be in Nice at the beginning and end of my trip to be near the airport.

Why not stay in Nice for the Riviera part of your trip and Avignon for the provence part? You have plenty of accomodation in both cities, they are big enough so you have lots of services and things to see (museums, etc) plus shopping.

Nice is a great place to base yourself from. The train connects pretty much all the cities and villages (with the exception of St. Paul de Vence and St. Tropez) you will want to see. Don%26#39;t miss Villefranche sur Mer. It%26#39;s a lovely small town with a picturesque harbor and a nice little (almost) sand beach, located right below the train station.

While as suggested Nice is a convenient option for the Cote D%26#39;Azur part I find Cannes more charming and picturesque ... Nice is a bit too big of a city and you can always visit it for a few hours.
