4 days in Provence - Help!

I will be in Provence with my husband for 4 days in October (after spending a week in Paris) to celebrate my birthday. I am torn between spending time around Monaco vs. villages that are quaint and not on the tourist path. (I am assuming I can%26#39;t do both). Any suggestions? I would love to visit a winery, shop antique stores and boutiques and would love a romantic place to eat and spend the day on my birthday.

I recommend the area around Orange, Chateauneuf de Pape, Carpentras and Voison la Romaine. If you would like to stay in a beautiful Provence hotel I warmly recommend Hotel Le Fiacre, located in Carpentras (rue de vigne). This hotel looks very anonymous on the outside, but have beautiful rooms, patio and reception area. Ask for the room with balcony. App. Euro 55 for room per night. Approximately 100 meter from the hotel you will find the restaurant Chez Serge, a superb place for any kind of events (birthdays) and with great food.

Every Thursday there is a market in Carpentras, one of the biggest in Provence. Catheauneuf de Pape is known for the wines, and in the other places as Orange and I%26#39;Isle de la Sourges (? not sure if the name is correct) you can walk around looking for antiques etc. Orange have an impressing amfi theatre (from Romans).

There is a lot of tourists in the area, but October is more quite and not so full of tourists.

There are some very nice villages above Nice, around Vence, etc. NOT St Paul de Vence--a horrible tourist trap. But look at this area and there are some nice small towns. Karen Brown%26#39;s guides have some excellent recommendations for small inns and B%26amp;B%26#39;s here, too. Enjoy yourself!

Just FYI, the market in Carpentras is every Friday, not Thursday and it is a great one.
