Hi,
I%26#39;m taking my Mum away for a long weekend for her 60th birthday in November. She hasn%26#39;t been away for ages and has always longed to go to Paris.
Can anyone recommend an area to stay in that will have a little bit of the wow factor, is well connected and is safe to walk out in at night please?

I%26#39;d stay in the 7th, either in the Rue Cler area or near the Ecole Militaire metro station. The area has a very Parisian feel - lots of outdoor cafes, boulangeries and patisseries, cute groceries, lots of trees and flowers AND a view of the Eiffel Tower. It%26#39;s an easy 7 min. walk to the Champ du Mars and the Eiffel Tower. I let my teenagers go out by themselves some. We also walked back from the Eiffel Tower pretty late at night a couple of times and never felt uneasy or unsafe at all. Most of the hotels in that area have at least a few rooms with a view of the Eiffel Tower. You could see if from our budget-priced room. The tower is lighted at night and twinkles for 10 minutes on the hour after dark. It%26#39;s quite a WOW sight.

For the hotel, what is your budget ?
If you are in Paris between 1st and 13th of November, I would suggest you invite your mother to a ballet evening at Opéra Garnier. At these dates, there is %26quot;Jewels%26quot; a gorgeous ballet choreographied by Balanchine, with costumes and sttings by Christian Lacroix.
Places are at 80 euros (cat 1) or 60 euros (cat 2), sold on Internet
Webpage.

Remember you need to %26quot;dress for the ballet%26quot;. That%26#39;s at least one more suitecase! :-)
Great suggestion. Get your tickets now though. As far as where to stay, rue Cler is extremely nice but the 7th in general is a bit lacking in great transportation options. I mean that there%26#39;s more distance between Metro and RER stops than in the center of Paris and thus, more walking. Buses aren%26#39;t much better in the 7th. The 7th can also be a bit boring on Sundays and bank holidays.
The %26quot;cafe culture%26quot; is more vibrant in the Marais, Ile St. Louis, St. Germain des Pres (between there and St. Michel and south to Luxembourg), the Latin Quarter near St. Michel or the Sorbonne, or the Louvre/Pyramides quarter between the Louvre and the Opera Garnier. All these places have a lot of Wow Factor and are beautiful and historic. They%26#39;re also very central and the distances to Paris attractions are very walkable.

Anxioulsly awaiting the Opéra de Paris programme in my mailbox. What, Lacroix costumes? I must see that. Will keep an eye on it. ;) Thanks ileana.

Hum, cocochanel, there is no pictures of Jewels in the Opera programme !
But you may have a look at this webpage, you%26#39;ll find a small picture with the costumes for %26quot;Emarald%26quot;, the most gorgeous ones ! (the other parts of the ballet are %26quot;Rubies%26quot; and %26quot;Diamonds%26quot;)

ileana,
I will find some on the Opera%26#39;s web page, non??
Did you get the printed programme for this winter already?
|||
Just had a look at culturekiosque. Gorgeous. Lacroix remains my favourite designer next to YSL and Armani...

Yes CocoChanel, i got the 2005-2006 programme months ago (i%26#39;m a regular balletgoer) but no interesting pictures on it.
You can find one here in the POB website, but you don%26#39;t really see the costumes, look only as %26quot;ordinary%26quot; white tutus

(In fact, they are gorgeous too, embroidered with %26quot;diamonds%26quot;)
Some years ago there was another ballet with costumes designed by Christian Lacroix : it was Sheherazade choregraphy by Branca Li.
