Day trips from Barcares and stopovers on way to Florence.

Question One: We are staying in Barcares for one week in October and wish to do some day trips by car from there. There have been a few ideas I have gleaned from other posts. Any suggestions? We have never been to France before.

Question Two: When leaving Barcares we will be travelling along the coast to Italy and have booked a hotel in Florence. We have two nights not booked on the way to Florence. Don%26#39;t want to stay in the expensive resort cities/towns. There are four of us in the group. Any ideas?

Still hoping that someone will help us out here. Thank you.

I%26#39;m in a rush so please excuse brief reply.

Day trips - Collioure (South along coast towards Spanish border) is wonderful, we%26#39;ve holidayed there twice in last three years.

Carcassonne (head for Narbonne on the Autoroute and then turn off towards Toulouse) is the most amazing medieval walled city. Unmissable if you%26#39;re in the region. You can also explore the Canal Du Midi, which like the medieval city in Carcassonne is a Unesco World Heritage site.

It%26#39;s a bit further to get to Toulouse (probably just under two hours or so drive) but again worth seeing.

Also you could head inland and see the Cathar Castles and the Aude Valley.

And I%26#39;ve never been there but the Sigean African Wildlife Reserve, very close to where you%26#39;re staying, looks interesting.

Stopping off on the way to Florence - I would recommend Nimes, which along with Toulouse is my favourite city in France for the first night and for the second night the Italian City of Genoa. Both have lots to see without being over-touristy, while beach resorts on the Italian side will be in out-of-season mode.

Having said that, if you can spare time to visit the fishing town of Santa Margherita Ligure and nearby Portofino once you%26#39;ve gone past Genoa, you certainly won%26#39;t regret it.

Thank you Capo. I have printed out your suggestions.
