I want to visit lourdes in the next few weeks but on quite a tight budget. Is it practical to stay in pau and travel to lourdes from there. is it an easy journey. do trains and buses get close to the actual grotto and lourdes sites or is it better to stay in lourdes itself or hire a car.

The rail journeys from Pau and Tarbes are both easy. The railway station is at the top of the hill and the grotto at the bottom. It is easy to walk but allow time to walk back and perhaps a stop. A hire car is no real use as you will still have to walk down.
I think Ibis (who are good value) have a hotel near the station. You will probably find the streets very crowded and the best way is to walk, but watch out for the tourist train that does a circuit every so often.
