eurail or pay as you go?

Hi



We are travelling in France and Italy for 2 1/2 months from November. I am unsure as to whether we should purchase a eurail pass for approx. $1000 AUS for a family, 2 sons 3 and 5 or to pay as we go. We are travelling from Paris to Antibes and Antibes to Lucca with day trips in between. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :o)

In general, rail pass valid in Italy is rarely a bargain because domestic fare for Italy is cheap.
