Vaux le Vicomte

Has anyone visited this chateau on their own without a car? Per my guide book you can take a train from Paris to Melun and then a 15 minute taxi drive to the chateau.

We went to the chateau just last July. RER to Melun (we went from gare de Lyon) then a taxi (20E). They will phone for a return taxi from the gift shop, if you want them to. I believe there is a shuttle type bus which goes out there too....for a reasonable price....maybe only on weekends. You might want to check that out.

Melun is a fairly large town and you will drive through it and a few miles out you are in the beautiful countryside. The chateau is terrific and you can rent a golf cart to roam around the fabulous huge grounds. There is also a nice place to eat near the entrance/exit and a good gift shop with decent prices and unusual items.

We all loved it.

I agree with everything said above... we did the same on a Sunday, however the caveat there is that there was ONE taxi in Melun working on Sunday, so he had to go and come back for passengers who were going different places... other than that, not a problem at all.

We took the driver%26#39;s card and asked the gift shop clerk to call him for us at the end of our visit - the shop was very nice about doing that, and he showed up within 10 minutes.

Yes i did that on my own last year. Remember NOT to go on a bank holiday as it doubles the price of a taxi . I ended up paying 18 euros one way, had it not been on a bank holiday it would have been cheaper. But i have seen on some adverts that they have a shuttle minibus from Melun on the week-ends, although i don%26#39;t know the price or how often it comes. But the chateau is really worth it!

Thanks, it is settle Vauz Le Vicomte here we come. I think we will go there before Versailles, since it was the inspiration for Versailles. Looks like the shuttle only runs on weekend and holidays and only till Oct 2. So taxi it will be, seems easy enough. It is a small world , 2 responses from Florida, Bea I lice just down the interstate from your on Pine Island.
